Everything you need to know: Epoxy adhesives | EVO-STIK UK

Epoxy adhesives, also referred to as epoxy glues or epoxy resins, are a powerhouse in the world of DIY projects and professional repairs. Renowned for their versatility, strength, and durability, epoxy adhesives can be your go-to solution for a variety of bonding needs.

In this guide, we’ll explore what epoxy adhesives are, the different types available, their pros and cons, and how to use them effectively, including tips for handling the best two part epoxy systems from EVO-STIK.

What are epoxy adhesives?

Epoxy adhesives are synthetic resins that, when mixed with a hardener, create a robust and durable bond. This chemical reaction transforms the liquid components into a solid adhesive capable of withstanding significant stress and environmental factors.

Using epoxy adhesives, you can bond many materials including, wood, plastic, metal and more. Plus, the strength and reliability they offer makes them perfect for use in applications ranging from crafts and home repairs, to professional construction projects.

Types of epoxy adhesives

Epoxy adhesives come in various forms tailored to specific applications. The most common types include one-part and two-part epoxies:

  • Single component epoxies: Pre-mixed adhesives that cure with heat or specific environmental conditions. Ideal for quick fixes and simple projects for their ease of use and no-mixing process.
  • Two-part epoxies: These consist of a resin and a hardener that must be mixed before application. They offer superior strength and versatility to one-part epoxies, making them popular among DIYers and professionals alike. They cure at room temperature, but the curing time can be sped up by heat.
  • Epoxy putties: These are versatile, two-part adhesives that can be moulded and shaped before hardening for a strong, durable bond. Perfect for sealing leaks in pipes and filling holes, cracks and chips in various materials like wood or metal.

Our epoxy range

The EVO-STIK epoxy adhesives range includes three types:

  • Epoxy Rapid Tubes - A two-part, solvent-free, rapid curing epoxy that can be handled within 30 minutes and will not rust.
  • Epoxy Rapid Syringe - A two-part, solvent-free, rapid curing epoxy in a convenient syringe that dispenses equal amounts of resin and hardener and is fitted with a resealable cap.
  • Hard & Fast Metal Epoxy Putty - A two-part epoxy that sets like steel in just 10 minutes and can be used underwater.

Why use epoxy adhesives?

The benefits

Chosen for their exceptional performance, epoxy adhesives offer many advantages to users, including:

  • High strength: Epoxy adhesives create bonds capable of withstanding heavy loads and stress.
  • Versatility: They can bond various materials, including wood, metal, glass, plastic, and ceramics.
  • Durability: Epoxies are resistant to water, heat, chemicals, and UV light.
  • Gap-filling: Perfect for uneven surfaces or gaps that need to be filled.
  • Long lifespan: Once cured, epoxy bonds can last for years without degrading.

Things to consider

Despite being a great allrounder for household repairs or crafting needs, there's some things to consider when choosing an epoxy adhesive for your project:

  • Two-part epoxies can be messy and require precise mixing in some cases.
  • Longer curing times for some formulations.
  • Rigid epoxies can have limited flexibility after curing.
  • Requires proper ventilation during application to avoid inhaling fumes.

How to use epoxy adhesives

Using epoxy adhesives effectively involves preparation, precision, and patience. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you achieve the best results:

What you will need:

  • EVO-STIK epoxy adhesive: Rapid Tubes or Rapid Syringe
  • Mixing tray or clean disposable surface (for epoxies that require manual mixing)
  • Spatula or disposable stick (for mixing)
  • Applicator (spatula or syringe)
  • Cleaning materials (like acetone or methylated spirits)

Optional:

  • Protective gloves and safety goggles

Step-by-step guide: How to use two-part epoxy adhesive:

1. Prepare the surface

Clean the surfaces to be bonded. Remove dirt, grease, or oil using a degreaser or alcohol.

Sand rough or shiny surfaces for better adhesion, then wipe away the dust.

2. Mix the epoxy

IMPORTANT: Follow the individual product instructions or technical data sheet as application will vary depending upon the type of epoxy you've selected.

Dispense your epoxy adhesive onto a clean, disposable surface or the tray provided. Reseal your tubes or syringe as soon as possible. Then, stir the adhesive thoroughly for at least 45 seconds using a spatula or similar tool to achieve a uniform mixture. Use within 2 minutes.

3. Apply the adhesive

Spread the epoxy evenly to both surfaces of the joint using an applicator tool to ensure precision and avoid excess mess.

4. Join the surfaces

Press the surfaces together and hold them in place until set using clamps or tape for approximately 10 minutes.

5. Leave to cure

Let the epoxy cure as per the specified time - approximately 30 minutes for both types of the EVO-STIK epoxy adhesives.

Good to know: Setting times may be shorter in hot weather. In cold conditions the rate of curing of the mixed adhesive may be slowed down significantly and weak joints may result. Best results are achieved between 20°C to 25°C.

Avoid moving or stressing the bond during this period to ensure a strong, durable bond.

6. Clean up

Wipe away excess adhesive before it cures using acetone or methylated spirits.

Dispose of leftover mixed epoxy and tools responsibly.

Need to remove cured epoxy adhesive? Cured adhesive residues can usually be dissolved from tools by soaking in commercial paint stripper. Refer to the paint stripper manufacturer’s instructions for use and safe handling. Assess a small trial area before general work.

Tips for success

  • Measure accurately: For two-part epoxy systems, maintaining the correct ratio of resin to hardener is crucial. The EVO-STIK Epoxy Syringe is perfect for dispensing equal measures of resin and hardener to make your life easier!
  • Work quickly: Once mixed, epoxy has a limited working time before it begins to set.
  • Ventilation: Although EVO-STIK offers low odour, solvent-free epoxy adhesives, it's always recommended to work in a well-ventilated area or wear a respirator to avoid exposure to any fumes.
  • Storage: Store epoxy components in a cool, dry place to extend shelf life.

Let's sum up!
